Wichita [WTC] linkage. This model enabled him to win a series of competitive
U.S. Dept.of Education/BIE research grants and national recognition, and
currently directs a USED/BIE grant to enhance institutional linkage and
International Business education. The continuing activities are housed in
the Center for International Business Advancement [CIBA]. Dr. deSilva is the
founding Director, CIBA.
Dr. deSilva had his education in Sri Lanka at Mahinda College, England and
USA receiving his Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees. He received
scholarships to study at Evansville, S. Illinois, Ohio State, Harvard,
Indiana and Stanford Universities. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at
Harvard and Indiana; a Ford Fellow at Ohio State and Stanford; and a
Visiting Professor at Indiana, Stanford, Wichita State, and several European
& Asian universities. Dr. deSilva was the first University Professor and
Founding Dean, Faculty of Management Studies at University of Sri Lanka and
pioneered the management education model [with Stanford, Indiana and other
agency collaboration] to introduce the first integrated undergraduate BBA,
BPA, BEcon., and postgraduate MPA & MBA professional programs. He has served
as a consultant to United Nations, ILO, APO [Japan]. He is a past President
of Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science [SS], President
Ceylon-America Society, and President, Junior Chamber of Commerce [Jaycees].
Dr. deSilva is a reviewer of over 22 International Business, Management &
Marketing texts for Publishers. His book, Glossary of Management Terminology
in English & Sinhala, adopted officially by SLIDA, is published by the Sri
Lanka Government,1991[rev.ed.].His research/teaching interests are:
Management Education & Internationalization of Business School Curricula;
SogoShosha & Chaebol: Trading Companies in US and World Trade; International
Influences on US Business and Competitiveness; Anatomy of International
Trade & Tariffs; Exporting Rationale: Pitfalls, Process & Prospects;
International & Comparative Management Practice & Strategy; Trade &
Competitive Strengths of the Triad [lead by US, Japan, & Germany]; Cultural
Diversity and International Marketing; Asia Rejoins the Globalization
Odyssey. China & India Joins the World Trading System. His national survey
of AACSB schools on Internationalization of Business School Curricula
resulted in invitations to conduct workshops at several universities and
Academy of International Business [AIB] & Management [AOM]. He has served as
an Editor for AOM-IMD and Chair AOM-AIB Jt- Committee on
Internationalization of the Business School Curricula. In 2006 he organized
twin events: [1] “Doing Business with EU25” Trade Conference, and [2] the
“Internationalization of the Business School Curricula Symposium/Workshops
in AACSB Core Areas” conducted by 28 experts/authors and co-sponsored by 21
CIBERs & BIEs funded by USED.
Dr. deSilva has been elected to the Fulbright Senior Specialist Roster and
is the first recipient of a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award in 2002 at
National Chengchi University, Taiwan; and engaged in IB curriculum/teaching
materials development, train & co-teach the senior seminar and new IMBA core
in international business. His special assignment was to establish a
CIBA-WTC model & linkages with the business community/and trade agencies. In
2005 Shanghai Foreign Trade Institute invited him for Guest Lectures &
develop a CIBA-WTC model. In July 2006 he was invited by FHW-Berlin to team
teach MBA Global Marketing & Corporate Strategy course and assist in a
CIBA-WTC linkage.
Dr. deSilva serves as Chair of the Executive Board of Directors of the World
Trade Council of Wichita, Inc. which he founded in affiliation with the
Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce and WSU-CIBA. The Board of Directors from
area MNCs are the ‘who's who’ of Kansas international business and serve as
the advisory council to CIBA & USED grants. During his continued tenure of
30 years as WTC Chair, he has organized 30 Annual World Trade Week trade
conferences & banquets, over 300 country/company, embassy/consulate/trade
agency monthly trade events &100 educational seminars in international trade
that won the US President's "E"& "E-Star” and USDOC Award for continued
export education service excellence. Organized historic 28th Annual World
Trade Week Honours ASEAN-10 Ambassadors & 19 trade dignitaries; in 2004;
29th WTW Honours NAFTA in 2005; and 30th WTW Honours EU 25 with 29 trade
dignitaries and currently planning 31st WTW 2007Honours the CIS-12.
Dr. deSilva was consulted in the establishment of World Trade Centers in Sri
Lanka, Denver, Wichita, Malaysia, and assisted Minister of International
Trade & Commerce to establish the World Trade Co-coordinating Council with
Ministry of Trade & Export Development Board and Chambers of
Commerce/Industry. He advised ProVice-Chancellor, University of Canberra,
AUSTRADE and ACT government in the establishment of Canberra Export Club
which resulted in an Australian delegation visiting WTC to sign an exchange
linkage between UC-WSU; and similarly assisted in establishing a CIBA-WTC
model in FHW Berlin and an exchange linkage with WSU, following a US-Germany
joint trade conference.
Dr. deSilva is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute [UK], and
holds membership in Academy of Management, Academy of International
Business, American Marketing Association and several other Asian
professional associations. He is regularly invited for
consultations/lectures by universities and professional trade organizations
in several Asia-Pacific and European nations, and is a Distinguished
Visiting Professor at the PostGraduate Institute of Management in Sri Lanka.
He has served various Kansas Governors International Trade Task Force and
Steering Committees, and was appointed by the Governor to the Kansas Cavalry
and International Trade Coordinating Council, and the US Dept. of Commerce
Mid-America District Export Council appointed by the US Secretary of
Commerce.
Dr. deSilva received the WSU President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement
2001, the WTC Award for 25 years of distinguished service 2003, the WSU
Alumni Association Faculty Achievement Award 2003 and “World Trade Center
Peace through Trade” Award 2004. Dr. deSilva is the first recipient of Rudd
Foundation Senior Fellow for distinguished service. In May 2006 WTW-EU 25
Banquet the Executive Board of Directors and the business community honoured
Chair Dr. deSilva by announcing the establishment of “Dr. Dharma deSilva
Endowed International Business Scholarship” in recognition of 30 years of
distinguished pioneering contributions in International Business education
and voluntary service to foster the work & ideals of world trade promotion
events via WSU’s CIBA-WTC, Wichita/Kansas & diplomatic/trade agency
partnerships. |
